Circles in development
| Circle | Brief description |
|---|---|
| Past and Present | Taking a broad view of history, politics, and philosophy, this Circle seeks to understand the present, and present-day politics, by better understanding the past and perceptions of the past. Discussions might include present-day conflicts and divisions, to understand the historical basis of these. The Circle takes a broad view of history and politics, not limited to the UK but looking internationally. |
| Archaeology | This Circle focuses on archaeology, and proposes visiting local sites, museums, and talks. It aims to make sense of the present through archaeological understanding. It will seek to link with Archaeology Week in July and heritage open events. |
| Philosophy in the Gallery | This Circle was renamed Thinking about Art. If you are interested in helping to get this Circle running please email discoverycircles@vaughan.coop |
| Art History / Exhibition Visitors | This Circle is now running and is called Vaughan Exhibition Visitors. Further information about this Circle. |
| Urban Explorers | This Circle is now running and is called the Vaughan City Explorers. Further information about this Circle. |
Circle ideas
Further ideas for potential circles have also been suggested:
| Circle | Brief description |
|---|---|
| US history /politics | (Absorbed into the Past and Present Circle). |
| 21st century music listening group | Finding examples of new composers and genres of music Global music from different cultures. Consider practical experience of trying out different instruments. |
| World musical instruments | Singing and playing musical instruments, talking about the instrument and music or just listen and learn music from a diverse city. |
| Working class history | Specifically looking at Leicester. E.g. Issues of immigration and its impact on the city, development of terraced housing. The Circle might explore local areas with this lens. |
| Great lives | Members take turns to propose a ‘great life’ – a person (dead or alive) they consider important or interesting. The Circle could start with people with a Leicester connection. The Circle would consider whether this is a ‘great life’ or not and if not why not. |
| Literature in translation | Focusing on either European or World literature. An extended book group – share the choice of books and take turns to lead / chair the discussion. |
| Cinema/films | This Circle would act as a film club. Members would watch a film at home and then meet to discuss it. They might also view films in the cinema and discuss it afterwards. |
| More or less | Circle would examine numbers in the news and basic statistics. It could also address basic economics and understanding finance. |
| Critical thinking | This Circle would focus on thinking critically. It would seek to consider questions such as: how do we get to believe what we hear or read? Who do we trust? The Circle could share authorised stories and examine media-factcheck. It could discuss current ‘urban myths’ or topics which are going around and consider how to fact-check. |
