Archaeology Discovery Circle – Launch

28th July @ 2:00 pm

Free

Leicester Vaughan College is launching its Archaeology Discovery Circle as part of the Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology. The launch will be on Tuesday 28 July 2026 at 2pm in the cafeteria of the Jewry Wall Museum in Leicester. The group is free and open to all adults.

A photo of the Jewry Wall with St Nicholas Church behind and the ruins of the rest of the baths in front.

The event will be lead and facilitated by Dr Ulla Rajala. It will be a democratic cooperative learning platform involving active participation, co-learning and co-production.

In this founding meeting, we will discuss what we will do within the Discovery Circle, the best time and day for the meeting and the name of the group. We will work in collaboration with the Jewry Wall so some find handling will be available for the group. We may do city walks, read articles, watch Time Team videos and discuss varied topics – please bring along any suggestions! We will also discuss how we want to run the Circle such as setting ‘ground rules’ and how we want to communicate about our activities. You can get some ideas about this by looking at our City Explorer’s page.

The Archaeology Discovery Circle will be a reimagining of the Vaughan Archaeological and Historical Society that was founded by W. G. Hoskins. We will do no fieldwork (unless people want to involve in contemporary archaeology) as Leicestershire Fieldworkers do fieldwalking and geophysics nor will we have traditional lectures as that is for Leicestershire Fieldworkers/Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society.
