SUMMARY:June Vaughan Forum: Life on a Tudor Manor
DESCRIPTION:Location: Leicester Adult Education College\, LE1 6QL\, Room E1 \n\n\n\nAbout the June Forum \n\n\n\nPresented by Alison Coates \n\n\n\nLVC member Alison Coates will talk about her experiences of re-enactment at Kentwell Manor\, Long Melford\, Suffolk and knowledge of everyday life in the Tudor period. Over many years\, Alison has had variety of roles from spinner to upper servant to the sister of the Earl of Oxford. Historical accuracy is very important and very well researched for all Kentwell re-enactors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe talk will give a feel of what it was like to live in a village or manor in the Tudor period\, from the gentry in the house to beggars at the gate.  She will explain what a Tudor manor was and the three levels in Tudor society.  Other aspects of everyday life she will cover include: meals\, manners and food preparation; craftsmen and common folk; the kinds of tasks women did; and visitors to the manor.  \n\n\n\n\nAlison will illustrate her talk with photos and other sources from Kentwell Manor re-enactments.  She will come dressed as her Tudor alter ego Widow Jennyt Grooby\, greet us in the English of the period and will bring a basket of eating and cooking implements. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \n\n\n\nAlison has given talks about the Tudor history to various societies and organisations around Leicestershire. She has been a Heritage Warden for Groby for three decades. \n\n\n\nEvent Details \n\n\n\nThis is an in-person Forum. There will be tea and cake before the Forum from 6.15 pm. The talk will start at 6.30pm and finish by 7.45pm. Venue: Leicester Adult Education College. \n\n\n\nHow to get your free ticket \n\n\n\nPlease sign up HERE to let us know that you will be attending this talk. SUMMARY:Archaeology Discovery Circle - Launch
DESCRIPTION:Leicester Vaughan College is launching its Archaeology Discovery Circle as part of the Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology. The launch will be on Tuesday 28 July 2026 at 2pm in the cafeteria of the Jewry Wall Museum in Leicester. The group is free and open to all adults. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event will be lead and facilitated by Dr Ulla Rajala. It will be a democratic cooperative learning platform involving active participation\, co-learning and co-production. \n\n\n\nIn this founding meeting\, we will discuss what we will do within the Discovery Circle\, the best time and day for the meeting and the name of the group. We will work in collaboration with the Jewry Wall so some find handling will be available for the group. We may do city walks\, read articles\, watch Time Team videos and discuss varied topics – please bring along any suggestions! We will also discuss how we want to run the Circle such as setting ‘ground rules’ and how we want to communicate about our activities. You can get some ideas about this by looking at our City Explorer’s page. \n\n\n\nThe Archaeology Discovery Circle will be a reimagining of the Vaughan Archaeological and Historical Society that was founded by W. G. Hoskins. We will do no fieldwork (unless people want to involve in contemporary archaeology) as Leicestershire Fieldworkers do fieldwalking and geophysics nor will we have traditional lectures as that is for Leicestershire Fieldworkers/Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society. \n\n\n\nSign up for this event here.
